Treatment

Treatment for patients born with a cleft lip and/or palate is usually quite extensive. However, the specifics of treatment vary by the surgeon's preference, and by the individual. For ease, I'll assume a patient with both a cleft lip and a cleft palate.
Treatment is first planned by a team of specialists, who work with the patient for many years after the initial repair. This team may include the following:

* plastic surgeon * speech and language therapist * orthodontist * maxillo facial surgeon * ear nose and throat specialist (ENT) * audiologist * pediatric dentist * geneticist * neurosurgeon * nurse * prosthodontist * pediatrician * social worker * dietician

Usually, however, not all of these are needed. For example, my team only includes a surgeon, speech and language therapist, orthodontist, ENT (I think, I don't quite remember), audiologist, dentist, and social worker. It just just depends on the case.

The typical treatment schedule is broken up into various periods below:
* Newborn to 12 Months * 1-5 Years * 5-13 Years * 13-18 Years * The Not-Quite-End Product
